Drafted: Undrafted. Signed as an international free agent on 7/26/10 by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Acquired: From the Pittsburgh Pirates on 8/27/13 in exchange for Marlon Byrd, John Buck and cash.
Scouting Report:
Defensively speaking, Herrera boasts good range and a sub-average arm, making him destined to man second base, rather than shortstop. Offensively, he has a quick a quick bat and more power than you would expect for someone his size. Although he isn't a speed demon, he should be capable of stealing 10+ bases per year. Strikeouts are the concern, as he has averaged one per game in 2013.
2013 Stats (to date):
West Virginia (Pitt-A): 423 AB, 69 R, 112 H, 27 2B, 11 HR, 37 BB, 110 SO, .265 BA, .330 OBP
Savannah (NYM-A): 19 AB, 6 R, 6H, 0 2B, 0 HR, 3 BB, 6 SO, .316 BA, .417 OBP
Potential:
Scouts generally believe Herrera to have all the capabilities of a starting second baseman at the MLB level. Per Jonathan Mayo of MiLb.com, Herrera figures to reach the big league club during the 2016 season.
What's Next:
Wait and see... At only 19 years old, Herrera has a lot of maturation to go before he's ready to head to Queens. His strike out rate is the largest concern going forward at the moment as it can get worse as he progresses through the system if his pitch recognition doesn't improve.
