Zack Wheeler, second year starting pitcher for the New York Mets has set himself a pretty high goal going into Spring Training. With fellow young stud Matt Harvey on the shelf for 2014 following Tommy John surgery, Wheeler wants the opening day start for the Mets this season, he revealed in a discussion recorded by Marc Carig of Newsday. Some quotes from the article:
"My plan is to go in there and battle for the Opening Day spot," Wheeler said, reiterating a goal he set for himself at the Mets' holiday party in December. "I don't see why I couldn't do it...
"It really just starts with attacking the hitters, command wise," Wheeler said. "If you attack the hitters, you'll be throwing around the zone a little bit more."
Of course, anyone who pitches for a professional team wants to be the Opening Day starter, so this is really no shock. It is good, however, that the two of them, Harvey and Wheeler, seem to be extremely motivated people. Wheeler is shooting to be the ace of the staff, Harvey is looking to come back by September. Seems that questions about work ethic won't be a problem with this group.
