Prospect Profile: Jacob deGrom

Bio:  6'4" 185 lbs from De Leon Springs, FL (Age 25)
Drafted:  Ninth round of the 2010 amateur draft by the New York Mets out of Stetson University.

Scouting Report:  If your looking for the guy in the Mets' minor league system who is "under the radar", you've found him.  Having lost a full season in 2011 to Tommy John surgery, at age 25 deGrom was reaching the point of no return this season for most pitching prospects.  He features a low 90's fastball which he pairs with a slider and change-up, both of which have fared better than expected in Las Vegas.

2013 Stats:
St. Lucie (A): 1-0, 3.00 ERA, 12 IP, 12 H, 4 ER, 1 HR, 2 BB, 13 SO (2 starts)
Binghamton (AA): 2-5, 4.80 ERA, 60 IP, 69 H, 32 ER, 4 HR, 20 BB, 44 SO (10 starts)
Las Vegas (AAA): 4-2, 4.52 ERA, 75.2 IP, 87 H, 38 ER, 6 HR, 24 BB, 63 SO (14 starts)

Potential:  deGrom stormed all the way from St. Lucie (A) to Las Vegas (AAA) this season.  Had he been on the 40-man roster, its very likely he may have been called up to fill one of the voids left by Matt Harvey or Jeremy Hefner.  He projects as a potential back of the rotation starter, as he continues to get stronger.

What's Next:  Health continues to be a concern for deGrom, as he left his final regular season start in Las Vegas with shoulder stiffness, which is expected to be minor.  If it is in fact minor and he arrives to spring training healthy next year, he figures to compete for a spot in the starting rotation.

    1. Nope, he did mean Robert Person. The fact that this name is no longer remembered tells you what he meant.

    2. But wouldn't it be something if DeGrom could possess the trade value to net the Mets someone like Jon Olerud?

  3. Well, the Mets flipped Robert Person for Olerud, so he wasn't a total bust for the franchise.
